About St Antonio Castle   St. Antonio Castle was constructed by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, making it one of the oldest European forts in sub-Saharan Africa, Built on a rocky promontory near the mouth of the Ankobra River, it was the second Portuguese fort built on the Gold Coast, after St. George's Castle (Elmina Castle).  Fort Saint Anthony was used as a trading post for gold, ivory, and slaves. It was also an important military base, and it was involved in several battles between the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.  The fort was captured by the Dutch in 1642 and subsequently made part of the Dutch Gold Coast.
